I Will Always Love the Drunk Dials

Drunk dial post #57 - last night, Ex Matt (alias: DDX) called. This is not out of the ordinary, as he will usually turn up to touch base every couple of months. It is so great talking to him, even though we were interrupted by call waitings from the Dr. (who thought it was fun to call me and hang up on me once I would click over - v. mature). Anyway, personality-wise, Matt and I could not be more alike. I used to joke that we hatched from the same egg, as we have exactly the same sense of humor, and are both pretty social and notoriously flirtatious. Beyond the basics, though, we couldn't be any more different.

I have to share the story of how we met, if only because it makes me laugh every time I think about it. Matt and I met, rather appropriately, on a 3 am trip to Burger King my senior year of college, through a mutual friend. Both of us a little wonky on alcohol, he jokingly proposed to me, and caused my knees to go so weak that I ended up leaving my purse at the restaurant and having to go back and get it. As luck would have it, I saw him at a bar the very next night (weird how that happens), and the rest was history. After I moved to Chicago, he made plans to move here...until some uh, legal troubles prevented him from doing so. Those same troubles led to the demise of the relationship, but we stayed in touch every so often, hence last night's dial. It was great talking to him, as it always is. He is a one-of-a-kind guy - and the only guy I know that thinks that playing tennis with a beer in one hand, your racket in another, and a cigarette dangling out of your mouth is customary.

Weird that we are able to be cool with everything despite how different we really are. We have had completely different upbringings, and lives. I can say that he's one of those rare people who really opened my eyes to a lot of stuff I hadn't ever seen before, which is a good thing. But I think the same shit that attracted us to one another in the first place inevitably killed the relationship, too. (Well, that and a lot of other things.)

Anyway, it was good to catch up with him...and in case he remembers the address and does end up reading this, I just wanted to give him a shoutout, which was sort of the purpose of this post.

I may outgrow a lot of things, but I don't think I will ever outgrow loving the drunk dial. Even when I am in deep slumber, if it's someone good, I can't resist picking up the phone to answer.
