Covering the Spread
I am learning the art of sports gambling. I consider myself a pretty educated person who knows about a lot of things, but sometimes, people talk about things, and I wonder where the hell I've been living for 24 years. For example, no one has ever been able to taught me how to play poker or euchre. Twenty-some years I have lived without those little black and red chips, and I have felt really left out of society. Go Fish? I've mastered it. Blackjack? I'm decent. But no poker, and no euchre. Second Chance once tried to teach me how to play poker a few months ago, but gave up when I got into an in-depth conversation with his roommate's girlfriend about her shoes. But I digress.Last night, for no apparent reason whatsoever, the topic of sports betting came up, and Matt was cool enough to give me a basic overview. And I am now proud to say that I understand how it all works. Sort of. It's not that sports betting is rocket science - I mean, I know some pretty dumb people who bet all the time, but how do you learn about who oddsmakers are and what "covering the spread" really means unless someone, at some point in time, explains it to you? (Or unless you are a straight male - I think they are born with a built-in sports chip in the brain.) Thankfully Matt is a cool, patient person, so he answered all of my questions and didn't tell me to shut up when I made some crude reference about what I thought covering the spread really meant.
So now I think I'm going to start dabbling in it, in preparation for the 05-06 season. And as soon as I master it, I'm moving on to poker and euchre, too.
